Jermaine Pennant set for Real Madrid move

JERMAINE Pennant could be set for a sensational move to Real Madrid – despite claims he may be on the brink of turning down the move over personal terms.

Liverpool accepted an offer in the region of £3m from the La Liga outfit yesterday and a deal could yet be completed if his personal terms can be resolved.

Pennant is out of contract at Anfield in the summer and would be able to leave Liverpool on a free transfer once his current deal expires in June. So any transfer fee brought in during the January transfer would be welcomed by the Reds.

Several Premier League clubs have been interested in signing the 25-year-old, with Wigan keen to take him on loan in January, and Stoke City and Blackburn having attempted to buy him last summer.

But the interest from Real has come out of the blue and Liverpool will be hoping that a deal can be concluded that would lead to Pennant plying his trade at a club outside the Premier League.

Having signed Pennant from Birmingham for a fee of £6.7m in the summer of 2006, Rafa Benitez made it clear that he was willing to let him go during the last transfer window.
