Carragher targets Pompey return

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher could return to action against Portsmouth this weekend after recovering from a rib injury.

Carragher is back in light training after he picked up the problem at Sunderland last month.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez is remaining cautious over Carragher's fitness and will wait until the end of the week before deciding if he will feature at Fratton Park.

He told the club's official website: "We must be careful with Carra, and we will wait until the end of the week to see how well he is.

"He is running again and he will do more training and then maybe we can see if he has a chance to play at the weekend. At this moment, it's still too early to say."

Meanwhile, Benitez was delighted to see Steven Gerrard come through England's clash with Israel unscathed.

Gerrard, who is struggling with a broken toe he picked up last month, did not require a painkilling injection and he could feature against Portsmouth if he reports no ill effects from Wednesday's clash with Russia.

"Steven did not need an injection and the fact he played with no problems and did well is good news for England, but even better news for Liverpool, thinking about our game with Portsmouth," added Benitez.
